Shostakovich Flute Trio Premiere

  • Morse Hall, The Juilliard School 155 West 65th Street New York, NY, 10023 United States (map)

Join flutist Nikka Gershman, cellist Elliot Lippy, and pianist Cosmo Coen at the premiere of Gershman’s transcription of Shostakovich’s Piano Trio no. 2 in E minor. The Trio has been studying under the mentorship of legendary coaches Jerome Lowenthal and Shai Wosner as part of the Juilliard Chamber Music program. Shostakovich conceived Trio no. 2 after a period of mourning the death of his close friend Ivan Sollertinsky, a tragedy which left Shostakovich almost completely unable to compose for months. It took almost a year for him to complete the heart-wrenching piece, which was ultimately dedicated to Sollertinsky. The famous fourth movement demonstrates Shostakovich’s fascination with Jewish folk motives, with an intoxicating rhythm entrancing his audiences. In Gershman’s new transcription for flute, the listener will notice that the flute switches to the piccolo, enabling the range of the instruments to stay faithful to the original parts. Join the Trio at the premiere of this transcription of Shostakovich’s monumental work that is a testament to the everlasting power of music.
