Flute Through the Ages, from Vivaldi to Liszt

  • St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University 1160 Amsterdam Avenue New York, NY, 10027 United States (map)

Nikka Gershman is a flutist and composer who believes in championing the flute as a soloist instrument. She was accepted to Juilliard at age 15 as a Kovner Fellow and was awarded the prestigious Career Grant from the Salon de Virtuosi. Joining this performance is acclaimed Italian pianist Matteo Generani, who recently released a recording of Giuseppe Martucci’s piano works on the Naxos label. This concert culminates with the premiere of Gershman’s transcription of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz for flute and piano, which was originally written for full orchestra before being arranged for piano by the composer himself. Gershman’s version fuses Liszt’s piano adaptation while being faithful to his orchestral score, and the duet encompasses the entire orchestral sound.
